the client

Akido Labs (Akido Health System) is a healthcare technology enterprise that creates intelligent clinical solutions and operates modern community care clinics. Its flagship platform, Akido Chart, is an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system built to optimize provider documentation, patient tracking, and clinic communication.

the role

In-Clinic Support & Product Design — bridging medical provider workflows with software execution by translating hands-on clinician feedback into high-fidelity interactive features and system enhancements.

the challenge

Medical providers and clinic staff conduct continuous patient documentation while juggling demanding daily workflows. Providers were frequently blindsided by last-minute walk-ins while reviewing charts, secondary clinicians investigating multi-year histories struggled with standard browser Ctrl+F across dozens of separate encounter notes, and clinic staff uploading external records faced a cramped thumbnail preview in the recent file upload pop-out—forcing constant modal expansions and risking misfiling documents to the wrong patient chart.

the solution

Designed and prototyped three interconnected clinical workflow solutions: (1) an ambient real-time top-navigation status badge, (2) an in-component longitudinal clinical note search engine that decouples search from the browser to query years of documentation at once, and (3) a redesigned high-accuracy patient document upload and indexing pop-out drawer with prominent right-hand side-by-side verification preview.

Real-Time Schedule Notification System

Provider-Validated Feature

During clinic observations, providers noted that while charting an ongoing visit or reviewing upcoming lab results, they were frequently blindsided by last-minute walk-ins or rescheduled appointments. To solve this, I designed and prototyped an interactive real-time status notification badge directly in the top navigation bar.

Clinicians validated that having ambient updates and unified task counters immediately visible resolved communication bottlenecks without forcing them to navigate away from active patient charts. Explore the real UI variations below to inspect different layout densities tested with the medical team.

In-Chart Clinical Note Search (Component-Level Find)

Clinician-Requested Feature

During clinic observations, a Physician Assistant (PA) working under a lead physician identified a severe workflow obstacle: when reviewing complex, multi-year patient charts, determining historical clinical milestones—such as the exact visit a patient was first prescribed losartan—was agonizingly slow. Because standard browser Ctrl+F only searches text inside the currently open note document, clinicians had to manually open, search, and close dozens of separate historical encounters one by one.

To eliminate this bottleneck, I designed and prototyped an in-component search engine embedded directly within the Notes workspace. By decoupling search from the native browser window, clinicians can query any medication, diagnosis, provider, or symptom across the patient’s entire multi-year chart simultaneously. Try the live interactive prototype below: click the sample query chips or type to inspect real-time excerpt snippets, multi-note filtering, and in-document match navigation.

Document Ingestion & Indexing Pop-Out Redesign

Design System Aligned · High-Accuracy Workflow

Following the recent deployment of Akido Chart’s patient file upload pop-out drawer, user observations uncovered an acute operational friction: while the core ingestion and form indexing layout worked smoothly, the document preview window was restricted to a cramped thumbnail in the left corner. Because clinical documents feature dense diagnostic text, medication dosages, and multi-column tables, staff were forced to trigger the full expand modal for virtually every uploaded file just to verify readability. This constant disruption derailed the rapid rhythm of intake and introduced a significant risk of filing records into the wrong patient's chart.

To eliminate this obstacle, I redesigned the pop-out drawer by relocating the document preview from the cramped left corner to the right half of the workspace and making it substantially larger by default. This structural realignment brings file upload into exact harmony with the rest of Akido’s slide-out drawer design system (primary navigation and form controls anchored on the left; deep inspection and preview docked on the right). Leaving the validated metadata form layout completely untouched, staff can now instantly verify document authenticity and patient identity at a glance without expanding, while retaining one-click access to the full expanded modal when needed.
